What is a "Turnitin Similarity Report"?
Turnitin is an originality checking service used within Higher Education to help educate and aid your writing for spotting citation mistakes or inappropriate copying. Once you submit a piece of work in Turnitin, the software compares the text submitted to their international database of student work, websites, books, and other journals/articles.
After a piece of work is submitted within Turnitin, it produces a Similarity Report (often also called an Originality Report) which you can only view in the AECC University College institutional "Try It out" area which is located within the VLE under MY COURSES > TOOLS FOR STUDENTS
Depending on your enrolment you will see a version of this:
Do I see a Similarity Report when I submit my final piece of coursework in a unit?
Only the teaching team can see the Similarity report for your assessed work. However, the "Try It Out" facility within Moodle is an educational tool whereby you can upload your draft coursework to get a general overview of your Similarity Report and if you need to make revisions to your draft work prior to the final coursework submission deadline.
What do I need to remember when uploading to Turnitin?
If you have never used Turnitin before, before submitting your first file you will be prompted to click to accept the Turnitin end user licence agreement (EULA), which will appear in a pop-up window. Once you work through the screens to upload your work, your file will be submitted to Turnitin and queued for comparison against their database of journals, the Internet and student papers (this process can take up to 24 hours).
Please note the following important points:
Please ignore any message regarding grading, due dates and time remaining in this "Try It out" Turnitin dropbox.
Troubleshooting and further help
If you are experiencing problems generating your Similarity Report please ensure you have waited at least 24 hours from when you uploaded your work and check again that the Similarity Report has processed in the Try it Out facility.
Turnitin's advice on how students can interpret the Similarity Report can be found here
