EndNote and Word are linked so that EndNote automatically updates your citations.  If you want to make any manual edits to your citations and reference list that you are unable to make using the 'Edit Citations' command, you will need to break this link.  Breaking this link will remove the EndNote codes in Word and turn all you citations into plain text, so that they will no longer be updated by EndNote.

This step should only be taken once you have finished working with EndNote in your document, as adding or removing any citations after removing the codes will not update your reference list.

1. Save a backup copy of your Word document with the EndNote link intact in case you need it.

2. To break the link with EndNote and remove the EndNote coding, go to your Word document and click the EndNote tab.  Click on 'Convert Citations and Bibliography' and 'Convert to Plain Text':
